I told you guys a little bit ago how we decided to build a home and settle down somewhere where our kids can grow up. You can read more about that if you missed it, here! We prayed and thought about where to live for a long time and always went back and forth between Arizona, Utah, and California. We have family in all three of those places and while in my dream world our entire family on both sides would relocate and all have farms in Connecticut or something.. that probably won’t happen and we love being by our family, so we are going to them. California got thrown out for a couple different reasons, it is definitely the most desirable location (being by the beach ah!) but it doesn’t work out for us at this stage in our lives. So then it was between Utah and Arizona and after looking in Arizona we both had a really good feeling about it. David’s family spends a lot of their summers in Utah so we knew we would be there for summers anyway, and with kid’s school schedules it doesn’t make sense to “winter” in Arizona so ultimately for many many reasons we decided on Arizona! I grew up in Arizona and both of my sisters, parents, grandparents, and cousins live there. We just got our offer accepted on a lot and once that closes we will begin working with our architect. We are doing a custom build so it will be a while until we are actually moving into our home! In fact it will be a few months before we even begin the building process.

My brother in law, Brad, owns his own contracting business and him and my sister renovate other’s homes, buy – fix up – sell homes, build homes, and my sis is a realtor! They are a total dream team. They just renovated their own home and it is the cutest house ever (see a pic here and all their projects, here) so they will be building our home and I am sooo excited. We worked with Becki Owens, she designed a few rooms in our apartment, and we are working with her again on the design of our Arizona home! She is so creative and I love her style and how she puts everything together (her insta here). I have 30 private Pinterest boards currently and have been pinning up a storm, I am so excited for this process.

Wanted to answer a couple questions we have been asked about the move that I have been asked recently……

Q: Why are you going to stop traveling?/Does this mean you are done traveling?

A: Nooo! Our home base will just be different. Traveling is our number one hobby. When we aren’t traveling I am planning itineraries, even if I know we wouldn’t go on the trip for 5 years. I love planning itineraries and love traveling so much. So does David and people are always shocked how well our kids do on flights so I think they love traveling to! Atticus always learns so much, especially since we are out and about seeing and doing things all day. We have some insane trips planned this winter – I am so stinking excited and can’t wait to tell you guys more. We are staying in NYC for the most part until our lease is up – we want to check more things off our bucket list before leaving.

Q: Will you be selling your New York apartment?/Did you ever buy in New York?

A: We had said we were considering buying an apartment a while ago, but at the time there was nothing on the market I felt like I was in love with.. And apartments in New York are a huge investment, I wanted to absolutely fall in love with something. We never did, so we are renting our current apartment.

Q: Will you still be having a cook out/BBQ before leaving? If so, when?

A: Yes yes yes! I said on snapchat maybe a week ago how David and I have been planning a massive game of kickball and a bbq in the park, open to anyone. We are thinking beginning of September – leave a comment if you will be in New York any time late August or early September! OR if you live in New York, leave a comment with which weekend you would want us to do! I will announce on here when we have a date set, it will be so fun.

Q: Why are you always moving?

A: Gooooooood question! I am not sure, its just how it has worked out. Which is partly why we want to build a home and have our home base stay put. Our last apartment just felt so small once we had Rosie so we moved to our current apartment that I am obsessed with. I actually thought we would be here for at least 3 more years but we just feel like this move is right for us. Is what it is I guess… so yeah I guess I don’t have an answer for this question! Just has worked out that way for some reason!

Q: How long until you move in?

A: My guess is at least a year. Like I said we won’t start building for another few months and we are still closing on the lot.

That is all! Let me know if you guys want to see the build out process!! xoxoxo

  26. I am so excited for you guys. Living in NYC is such a crazy adventure I can imagine, I also imagine it’s a tough (and expensive!) place to raise your kids. You seem so close with your family and sisters, I’m jealous you get to be close by! So excited for your little family to move!
    Xo, Tara

  29. How exciting! Congratulations on finding a lot you love and beginning work already =o) I work in residential architecture and the most exciting time is when you first sit down with a client and begin to design and layout their home, it’s such a unique and intimate experience. Can’t wait to see how building goes =o)

  30. Hey Amber! So I am from Australia and really love your blog. I’m visiting New York Jan 2017 for a week and I am just wondering if you have any tips on surviving New York weather and maybe some of the best places to visit in NY. Also it’s just going to be me and friend (both 18 year old girls) and we want to get around but we want to be safe 🙂 Thanks!

  31. I am so exited, Amber. I live in Arizona (east valley!), SAHM, and have a baby Atticus’s age! Let’s be besties 🙂

  32. I’ve lived in Colorado, Utah, and Arizona and Arizona has been my favourite by far! I was so bummed I missed your meet and greet on your last visit here. I am a recent fan of your cute family and would just love to meet you guys! I can’t wait to hear about the progress of your new home. Get ready for some crazy monsoon weather, our park is turning into a mini lake at this very moment! Good luck!

  36. I had a feeling it would be AZ 🙂 Welcome back! Can I ask, where that bookcase is from? If you tell me it’s an IKEA hack I’m going to die! 🙂 xo!

  37. Congratulations on your soon to be home! I would love to see the buildout process! XX

  38. Where in Arizona ? I think you won’t like it if you like NY. I moved here a year ago and it’s very boring. At least you get to leave and travel I guess? It’s low cost of living for a reason. No grass no yards, just the desolate desert. Sorry to be a downer but it’s a pretty dull place.

  39. I actually live in Manhattan and moving our family to Arizona next june! I would love to go to a bbq my kids would have so much fun.

  40. Congratulations! I so look forward to seeing your posts about your move and new life in Arizona! Your family is a complete dream. I will be in NYC August 15-19. Running into you would make my life. Xoxo to you and your family!

  41. OMG congratulations!! That’s so exciting! California is wonderful but it’s a pretty expensive place to live. And I’ve heard the weather in Arizona is nicer anyways. I’d love to come visit in Arizona if you do any meetups or anything! I can’t wait to see how the house turns out, I love your style 🙂 Congratulations again girl!

  42. How exciting the bbq and the next move! I always get very nervous with moving to a new place, but I guess you guys are used to now. Best luck building your new home. Congrats!!

  43. Im a Jersey girl so a trip to NYC is no problem! I deff will be around for the massive bash! 🙂

  44. I’m a New Yorker, but there’s so many places I’ve never been still. You should write a blog entry on all your favorite Manhattan places you’ve been and loved; stores, restaurants, activities, etc, that you’d recommend people checking out. I’d also love to see your New York Bucket List of things you still want to do in that same entry.

Good luck with closing on the lot, building the house and the move back to your home state. I’d like to see the build out process.

  45. I’m so excited for y’all! Please keep us updated on all the progress!

  46. Oh my goodness, I am so happy for you guys! It will be so wonderful for you guys to be near your family. And your kids will grow up with their cousins. My sis and I grew up in California, but all of our cousins lived in Oklahoma, Kansas, and Texas. We would go to Oklahoma every summer to be near them. But, it’s not the same as living nearby all the time. I’m so happy for you guys! I would love to see your building process of your new house. I find that kind of stuff fascinating. ? I SO wish I could come to NYC for your bbq! I want to be friends with you, haha!!! I hope you guys have a blast!

  47. This is so great! My husband and I lived in Manhattan for about 2 years. I loved it but I wasn’t really wanting to live there long term. NYC was so expensive for us too. So for us, leaving the city and saving more opened up the door to travel. So we can still visit the city, but now we aren’t paying an insane amount on rent and can visit other parts of the world! Congrats on the great news! And duh. We totally want to see the build out process!

  48. I LOVE your blog and your beautiful family! I own and we specialize in European inspired furniture with a contemporary twist. Let me know if we can help you furnish any of your new home. I think you would love some of our stuff! 🙂

  49. LOVE AZ!! I grew up in Phoenix and have been living in Orange county for the past 3 ish years but I know we’ll be moving back when it’s time to start a family! It’s the best!

  50. Oh my God! Can it please be Septemver? I will be there in New York and I’m making the travel from Pakistan. My sister and I love you and your family tons. I would love meeting you and those babies :*
Lots of love from across the oceans 😀

  51. Yayyy!!! I’m so excited you guys chose Arizona! I’ve been born and raised in the West valley of AZ and am raising my family here too (along with my husband of course)! I hope one day I run into you guys! You and your family are so sweet! ?

  52. So excited to hear you’re moving to Arizona! 😀 I live in Scottsdale and AZ is a wonderful state to live in.. Looking forward to future blogs of you and your beautiful family <3

  53. So excited for you guys!! I grew up in AZ too and now am raising my family here and we love it! Good luck!

  60. Please do Labor Day weekend!! Then I can make a trip without worrying about missing school. I’m sure a lot of your readers that will be traveling from out of town that have school or work or something would agree!! (Hopefully) haha

  61. Oh congratulations Amber! There is nothing better than being with family with the kids. It gives relationships opportunities that they wouldn’t have had otherwise.

  62. That’s so exciting! I mean I love NYC and I love seeing it through your eyes, but I totally think that for the purposes of raising a family that having a proper home with a yard and family nearby is very important! Can’t wait to follow your journey out to Arizona 🙂

So cool, can’t wait! Love your cute family!!! I’m your number one fan by the way 🙂 P.S. My daughter Violet is one year and one day younger than Atticus :)))

  75. Family is everything. We live by both our families and it is perfect. Our kids get to grow up really knowing their grand parents and having fun with all their cousins. My parents are starting to age and I want to spend as much time with them as I can. We bought a fixer upper and have been customizing it since 2009. Working on front landscaping right now. I probably will get a nice tan while at it too. You could not pry me away from Nort Dakota for anything. Wide open spaces and soooo much room for the kidos. I bet is is nice for you to get to move home. I am sure your kids will get to have even more special times with their whole family. Such a treat! Enjoy the building process.

  76. I would love to see the building process all the disigns and more more 🙂 nice job and congrats for buying the lot happy for you!! I leave in New Jersey but now traveling to Armenia till September 10 so I can’t see you guys during the bbq..enjoy ??❤️?

  89. Hi Amber! I am so excited to read you are moving to AZ!! I met you at The Soda Shop in Gilbert a few weeks ago and mentioned that AZ would be a perfect place to raise a family! Are you planning on moving to Phoenix (Gilbert) or a different city? You will love Gilbert / San Tan area if you do decide on Phoenix! 🙂

  90. I’m in NY and have a one year old (with one on the way)! Any week other than the first week of September please!! Love hearing about Atticus and Rosie through the blog and So happy for your family and home and move. Hope it all goes as planned!

  91. Very exciting! We just bought our forever home last month. I always wanted to build a home but when I walked into our current house, I just knew that was it. Our son has a playroom and I converted the attic into a full walk-in closet. Good luck with everything!

  92. I might be in NYC over Labor Day weekend this September! if that could be a possible day, that would be so much fun!

  93. Congratulations to you and family! I lived in Arizona for 32 years and still have a place there. I moved to St George for medical reasons, if it wasn’t for that I would still be in Arizona. Beautiful state with so much to offer! Best of luck on your new adventure.

  94. A huge congratulations! While NYC is awesome and one of my fave cities, think of how warm Arizona will be all the time! Lol!

  95. I knew you would move to Arizona!! Please share the building process!! I love your blog and you are so inspiring!!

  97. Congratulations on the big decision to move! Hope all goes well on the closing. I’m excited to watch the building process!!

  98. NYC (kind of) person here. Been dying to meet your little family. That would be SO great if you do the park event. If you start taking votes on dates I want to put a little vote into doing it not the very beginning of September, but maybe second weekend (after Labor Day). Weddings are in crazy swing this year 🙂 Much love!

  99. Congrats on your move! Wish you were moving to California….I could have been your colorist if you moved to San Diego ?. Keep traveling because you will never regret making memories like that. I have three kids and I wish we would have traveled more with them when they were babies, now it’s too difficult with their school and sports schedules. Can’t wait to see your completed house and congrats again!

  100. Congrats, I hope everything works out with the moving process! Which city in Arizona have you guys decided on?

  101. How exciting! Can’t wait to see the finished product – Becki Owens is awesome!

  102. Oh my goodness!!! I currently live in Arizona, and I follow your family’s posts religiously. This just made me so happy! So excited for your family! Have you thought about what school district? Because I know they can be very hit or miss out here.. Let me know if you need more information on them! I just graduated from ASU with my degree in Education, so I would be more than happy to help! ?

  103. I would love love love to see the building process because i love seeing homie stuff!!! Amber, you are such a beautiful girl and it makes my heart happy to see someone living their dream. I hope one day, I will be lucky enough to have walked the path less traveled which will lead me to my better then perfect reality, which my God has planned. You really are an example in which I would like to follow someday, as I am just now entering High School this coming school year. I hope I am lucky enough to have a family as cute and loving as yours! I know this might sound completely stupid, but I would love to get to know more about you, as would everyone else who reads your blogs, but it would certainly be wonderful if you read this and had the chance to leave me a comment back!!! I hope you and your family are doing well, and continue to prosper in your work, and have a wonderful rest of your morning, afternoon, or night!!

  104. So happy for you and your family!!! Congrats on the start of this amazing project, building your home. Would defiantly enjoy reading updates how process is going.
About meet up, I would be so excited if it’s like second week in September. I been patiently waiting to meet you in person, I am jealous of my friend Stephanie that she gets to shoot pictures of you sometimes 🙂 she is awesome.

  105. Hi! I have loved seeing bits and pieces of your apartment, but I was wondering if you could possibly do an apartment tour-thingy? I know you must be really busy with two (adorable!) kids and everything, so if not, that’s totally okay!! Thank you for sharing so much of your life. I LOVE your blog, and your parenting style!!!

  106. So excited for you all! Can’t wait to obsess over your new home! If you ever come through Lawrence, KS feel free to drop Chauncey off ?

  107. I’d love to see the building process! My husband and I have just started working on architectural plans for our custom house and it’s so exciting/intimidating! I always like your style and would be very interested to see your house choices. It sounds wonderful to be settled close by family, we were able to get a lot right by my husbands family and we’re looking forward to it so much.

  108. What area are you building in? My husband and I recently moved to Arizona to be with my parents and sister and can’t decide where to buy /build a house!

  109. These are the perfect family photos. I love how you’re the only one wearing shoes! And how cute is atticus! He’s handsome in his button up and shorts. He definitely is going to be a lady’s man if hes already giving girls flowers lol. Also congrats on your move. I can’t wait to see how you decorate it. Best of luck amber!

  119. Congratulations on your new move. I feel as much as it’s so fun to live in NY, there probably a huge selection on bigger units for a growing family. 142. So excited for you! Building a home is such a special opportunity. My husband and I have been in our new build eight months now and it’s been a labor of love with great memories along they way. We love that it is full of our choices and just the way we like it! Becki Owens is one of my absolute favorite designers. To answer your question – yes! Please share the build process! Looking forward to seeing what you choose!

  146. Congratulations Amber! My husband and I just finished building our dream home on the lake, and building custom is so fun but so much work!! I am looking forward to seeing posts about your home in the near future 🙂 Please continue blogging – you are by far my favorite!

  147. So happy for you! If you’re still in NYC in June I hope you will do a meet up sometime because I will be there!

  148. This is so exciting, congrats! People at work always ask why my mom is moving too and are quite negative about it. It’s really none of their business and if you don’t mind moving and are making money off of selling their previous properties, then why the hell not? Plus, this time they moved so that they could have more land for their animals. Sounds like a pretty valid reason to me. Good luck with everything!

  149. This is so exciting!! I vote Sept 4-5th for the BBQ!! My husband and I will be on our babymoon and traveling through NYC these days! ?

  150. Can’t wait to see the house!! Will you be moving to Az before the house is done to over see everything?

  156. Congratulations Amber and David! I have been following along your journey for years and I look forward to seeing the amazing home you build for yourselves 🙂

  157. Yay! So excited to see your house! Sometimes it takes a minute to find where you want a home base to be, so I totally understand the “always moving” thing! Also I live in NYC and would maybe come to the BBQ? I guess sometimes I get nervous about who will be at these types of things hahahahaha. But idk if I have a friend going then maybe I will and either weekend would work. So excited to see your cute house in Arizona!

  158. OMG!!!! So super excited for all of you!!!! Dang…. I wish it was a farm here in Connecticut!!!! And Chauncey will absolutely love love it!!!
