Buying a magazine for myself is such a treat and only a semi annual thing.. I kind of think they are rather expensive (at least for such a quick read its expensive), or maybe I am just super cheap. But something about reading a magazine feels girly to me and since I love them and love looking at the ads and seeing all of my favorite models and reading new random tips, I treat myself to them every now and again.
So a couple weeks ago something came over me and I found myself at the Target register buying a Women’s Health magazine. I made sure I read it from cover to cover so my $4.99 wouldn’t go to complete waste (I tell you, I am pretty darn cheap.) Anyways, I saw this cool article about watermelon juice.
They said that in a recent study mice were fed a diet high in saturated fat and cholestrol and the mice that had watermelon juice with that diet gained 30% less weight than those that didnt. They say it is due to an amino acid called citrulline which is also found in garlic, onions, and chickpeas.
Anyways, I thought that was pretty cool and my husband and I decided to give it a try. I was kind of nervous to make ‘Watermelon Juice’ because my thinking was, here we have this delicious watermelon, if the drink sucks, it will be gone and I won’t even have a delicious drink! But luckily, it is really yummy!! And it also has other benefits like helping with aging, and kickstarts your metabolism for the day! Whether this is all true or not, I am not a scientist.. but I think the drink is good anyways, so I am running with it!
We did:
(makes one serving)
3 cups watermelon
1 Tbsp. honey
1Tbsp. lemon juice
1/2 tsp. ginger (juiced)
4 ice cubes
& blend all together in a blender or magic bullet 🙂

  1. So I juice the ginger root first in a juicer and then put everything in a blender? Is the half teas of ginger before it is juiced or half teas of juice?

    1. It is after it is juiced!! So we will just extra and just put it in a tupperware for the next day!

  2. Hey Amber, I just started following your blog a few weeks ago and really enjoy it, but now I especially do after this post! I’m actually the Associate Editor at Women’s Health, and I’m glad it was our magazine that you decided to pick up. Any studies or research we report go through a thorough fact-checking process, so you can believe the powers of watermelon!

Keep up the great blogging, and hopefully you read my article on page 74! 😉

  3. I just read the same article yesterday! I however, have a magazine addiction I seriously buy them all the time! Thanks for sharing your recipe. 🙂

    1. Haha k I totally didn’t even plan that and was actually so mad when I realized because I thought it was maybe too matchy matchy and couldn’t tell if it was cute or not!! But I am glad you like it that makes me feel better!!! 🙂 Thanks girl!!!

  4. The juice sounds delicious! I wouldn’t think that Watermelon has many nutrients but the study sounds interesting. I’ve got another juice recipe to try 🙂

  5. Ok, I am going away from the watermelon comment (which looks delish by the way and my have to try) and have to agree with magazine prices. OMG are they serious! Like you, I don’t buy them very often. Actually only when I travel. So this weekend I will succumb to powers that be and buy some mags. Welcome back!

    1. Laura!! Oh my heck thank you for agreeing with me! Hello, $5 for a freaking magazine is ridiculous!! And I am the same, usually only when I am traveling or know I will be bored somewhere for a long period of time! Haha I am glad we agree!

  6. Mmmm watermelon juice is my fave!! A lot of Asian cafes have fresh juices but it is just straight watermelon so I need to try that mix sometime!

    xo, Andrea

    1. Oh good to know about the Asian cafes! I always wonder where I can buy fresh juices on the go! But yeah youll have to give this a try! xx

  7. We drank this every day on our honeymoon!! They had cantaloupe juice too which was delicious. So yummy!! I need to make some!

  8. I don’t have a juicer, but this does look really good! And I know ginger and lemon juice are two other things that are so good for you. This looks like a yummy treat!

    1. You don’t even have to add the ginger if you didnt want to, you could just blend all the other things, it would still be healthy and yummy!! 🙂

  9. oh man I cannot wait to make this! Looks extremely yummy! Thank goodness is grocery shopping day because a watermelon just got added to my list. <3

    1. I love this sweater too but what is D.I.? Maybe I live under a rock but I have never heard of it.

P.S. Just discovered your blog and am loving it!

  10. Ok I have to ask since I’ve now been searching since you posted this and I can’t find them anywhere! Where in the world did you find the big blender cups with the grips on them? I’m obsessed with my bullet but need to find some bigger cups for it. Thanks in advance 🙂

    1. Cassidie! So ours isnt a Magic Bullet it is the Target mock version of the Magic Bullet called the Bella!! It is only like $20 and comes with the grip cups!! It works just as good as the bullet!

  11. This sounds pretty good! Ive been dying to grab a watermelon here but dont know if theyre decent yet. Nothing worse than getting a grainy watermelon!

    1. Ugh I know!! We were nervous how it would taste but I asked the guy at the grocery store how they were and he said they were delicious! And luckily they were! But yes, grainy watermelon is no good!

    1. Yeah I do it as a meal replacement!! Juicing isnt time consuming but if you don’t clean the juicer right away then it dries and takes a long time to clean! We love juicing though so I would recommend it!
