The Power of Now Review

Okay guys I know I have been slacking on actually keeping you guys up to date on this whole book club thing!!! I casually said that in May I was reading The Power of Now and I absolutely loved it so I wanted to share a bit about why I loved it.

I first listened to Eckhart Tolle on Oprah’s Supersoul Podcast and was absolutely in love with everything he talked about. It had my wheels spinning all week because I was so intrigued. I started reading a bit more about him and read a bunch of quotes by him and decided to finally read his book! This is actually just one of his books and I really want to read the others now. The book is about spiritual enlightenment and learning to be fully present which is something you guys know I have really been working on. I used to think being present just meant not having your phone out or being distracted but the more I started reading about being FULLY present I learned it is so much more. It is listening to people with your whole body and specifically listening to loved ones without your mind, paying attention to each part of your body, reclaiming consciousness, and more. Again, none of this I have mastered. It is actually so hard to remember to do this all day every day. So I find that I dedicate portions of my day to doing this and really try to just master that first. I wanted to share so many thoughts on this but he goes so deep that I feel it is so hard to talk about in just a blog post. I wanted to share some of my favorite quotes that really capture what I got from the book. And I also wanted to share a few tricks I learned below.

One thing I loved is that he talks about different tricks you can do to go deeper into the now. It is so hard because sometimes when you are trying to be in the now, you think so much about trying that the thoughts of trying and wondering why your mind wanders occupies your mind even more. So here are some of his tricks that I really love!

1. Close your eyes and pay attention to your breath. Now picture yourself in a room filled with light and start to breath in that light and bring it into your body and just focus on bringing the light in with breath.

2. Close your eyes and start with your toes working your way up going through each body part and really paying attention to each body part. What it feels like, what its touching, everything.

3. Think “I wonder what my next thought will be” and as you wait you will be thoughtless and can slowly go into the now.

My other favorite part was just everything he said about accepting your present situation and how your ego and consciousness play roles in that. I think about it every time I get frustrated or annoyed now. If you read it too leave anything you learned in the comments! I really want to read his A New Earth book now. I seriously find everything he says so interesting. I would recommend it to anyone who is looking to have peace, be more in control of your emotions, or looking to learn to be more present in their life. This is definitely one that has made impacts and changes in the way I live.

And even if you didn’t read the book, read the quotes because they are so good 🙂

  1. Hi Amber! I LOVED The Power of Now, I read it about 4 months ago when I was having a lot of anger and frustration in my life, and it really helped me. I am currently reading A New Earth, and let me tell you, YOU WILL LOVE IT. Eckhart is seriously the best. This book talks a lot about the ego, and is truly helpful if you are dealing with moodiness because of other people. It will help diffuse annoyances and bring you back to calm. I’m so glad you are a Tolle fan, makes me really relate to you! PS your kids are so cute it makes me want to have children of my own, you make parenting look so fun, I love when Rosie dances! XOXO- Emma

  2. I just heard about him from the Lively Show Podcast, which I would also recommend to you as she explores a lot of these themes in such interesting and super positive ways!

  3. A friend gave me this book many, many years ago, and it still stands as one of the best books I’ve ever read… and the only book I’ve read 3 times.
    Great post.

  4. I absolutely have to get my hands on this. Amazing post Amber (as always).

  5. I’ve had this book on my list to read for so long, but seeing all the wonderful quotes, I’m finally going to read it. Can’t wait. Thanks for sharing your takeaways.

  8. I love this book! After you read A New Earth I recommend checking out Eckhart Tolle’s Now app. It has answered a lot of my questions and it has helped me to be more present.

  9. Ahh I just bought this a few weeks ago! I love it so much, I’m about halfway through. The quotes you pulled are beautiful, too. It’s so nice thinking about the only real time we ever have is now.

  10. I thought it was so cool that you picked this for book club because I had purchased it a while ago and never got around to reading it! So, i finally got around to it thanks to you! I learned that every minute you spend worrying about the future or regretting the past is a minute lost, because all you really have to do is live in the now… the present! I think realizing that thats all you really have and making the NOW your primary focus will help you live a happy and less stressful life. I noticed that it took me a while to read the book because it was a lot of small talk so reading it in small pieces allowed me to deeply understand, appreciate and reflect on what I was reading! All in all, it’s a beautiful message and I want to read some more of his books as well. Thank you! Hope you’re having the best week everyone!!

  11. I actually read A New Earth before I read The Power Of Now! I think you will LOVE A New Earth too! I gave a copy to my dad and it totally has changed his way of life and demeanor for the better.

  12. That quote about complaining – wow, it’s so true! I always try and be positive, but I never thought of it as action versus inaction. It sounds like this book is a huge game changer! Thank you for the recommendation! xAlle
