David and I used to always make green juice smoothies for breakfast and we are back in the habit. We take turns at the gym in the morning and when we get back, we start off with one of these. I’ve posted it on snapchat and received a lot of requests to share the recipe. We’ve been making it for a few years now but have nailed the recipe down to something we love, and Atticus likes it too. So if we can get him to eat a bunch of fruits and veggies in one sitting, then its a success! It’s really hard to mess up. You can stick to these basics, but tweak it to personal preference and really can’t go wrong. 

*Makes enough for me, David, and Atticus

4-6 kale leaves + stems

1/3 large cucumber

1 half apple

1 half orange or one medium tangerine

1 cup grapes

1 half cup pineapple

2 tablespoons of agave syrup

1 cup coconut water

1-2 cups water (depending on if you like your smoothie to be more smoothie or juice)

1/2 – 1 cups of ice to keep cold

I find it easier to blend it all together if you put the kale on the bottom. We love our Vitamix because you can pretty much throw everything in whole or just roughly chop and let it do the rest without getting clogged up. We debated between the Vitamix and Blendtec but I got this because it had the wand you can use to stir while its blending.. but I have heard both are comparable! I blend it down real good because when you aren’t juicing, but making smoothies, it tends to get pretty pulpy. The pulp is where all the nutrients are, but you can make the texture better by adding a little more water and blending it thoroughly. This is also why I like to add ice because when you blend for that long, a high powered blender can actually warm up whatever you’re blending. If you don’t have a high powered blender you could try straining after? I have never done that but seems like it would work haha who knows. It will be a lil pulpy but shouldn’t have chunks. PS do chunks in a smoothie make anyone else squirm? Chunk hater over here.

  2. I really dont think you need the agave nectar, for our smoothies I do a banana, spinach, cucumber, celery and some frozen blueberries and SunWarrior Protein Powder. My two year old chugs it!

  3. YES! We love green smoothies. Best way to quickly and deliciously get all the goods we need. Sometimes we add a scoop of peanut butter in there too, and it is SO good.

  14. I just started drinking green juices. It is a great way to get healthy after I had my baby. I would love to vet Vitamix one day. It is pretty expensive here in Europe.;-( And I don’t mind pulp in my smoothie.

  16. I’ll have to try this! My boyfriend is always making smoothies, but I’m never a fan because of all the chucks in it! Next time i’ll get him to add more water and blend it a lot more, hopefully that will help!

  17. I wish I could get behind green juice but it scares me lmao. It seems like it would taste like death. My post-workout is personally a smoothie from Booster Juice. It’s called Tropical Tornado and has pineapples, mangos, bananas, strawberries & yogurt. Although I take the yogurt out and add in whey (#gainz). Tastes amazing. Only smoothie I’ll have 🙂

  19. Yes, chunks at the bottom of a smoothie are nasty! I hate when you go to Jamba juice and you find frozen chunks at the bottom especially since they are kind of like balls of fruit rather than a chunk since they have been partially blended!!! I always thought I was weird about hating it haha
