Savor the Moment : Tips for Being Mindfully Present

In talking with a friend the other day she was telling me about her life with starting her own business, wanting to start a family and plans for her future. It made me realize that we are all going through our own, different journeys. There was a season of my life, after we experienced a miscarriage, where all I wanted in life was to be pregnant. It was what I thought of everyday and it consumed me. For some of you it’s waiting for a spouse and others for a baby. Some are trying to figure out how to be happier, others learning how to take it slow.

In my life right now, as a working mom of two, I long for stillness, peace and for everything to slooooow down. Ever since we had Jacob I feel like everything is in fast forward and it scares me.

At the beginning of this year I had a lot of personal lifestyle changes that I am happy to say that most I have started and stuck with (yay me!). One that I’m still working on and will probably continue to work on is being more present with my family. It’s so easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of everyday life that we lose sight of what’s truly important. While on this journey I’ve been reading a few books (periodically) that have taught me how to take a moment to pause, breathe and be mindful of what I’m doing at that particular instant.

Mindfulness (to me) is a fancy word for Focus. It sounds easy but I’ve realized that it’s really not that simple. However, when you remind yourself to be mindful, it’s like a window opening up on a bright sunny day and all your senses are heightened while focusing on that one particular activity.

I’m still on this journey of mindfulness and it’s something I’m learning to practice every day. Here are a few tips to get you started on being mindfully present.

1.Baby Steps  Take a few seconds a day to embrace what you’re doing, whether it’s feeling your hair while you comb it in the morning or the water splashing against your skin during a shower. Be cautious of your surroundings and focus on just that one thing.

2.Be Grateful Journal the things you’re thankful for-the big, the small. Over time this will become a habit and you’ll notice more positive thinking.

3.Make a List of Goals for the day  A lot of times it’s hard to focus on just one thing because we feel we need to keep reminding ourselves of all the other things we have to take care of. Dedicating time for specific tasks during your day will allow you to focus on what you’re presently doing because you know there is time dedicated for all those other things.

4. Practice  Right now I’m still in the learning process and since I am I’ve realized that I need to read more and learn more. So I’ve set all my books on my night stand and every night I pick one up to read for a few moments. While doing so, I also try to practice what I’ve learned- I touch the pages of the book I’m reading, look closely to the writing and text on the pages, and try to turn off everything around me so I can capture every word being read.

5. Take It Slow I feel nowadays we are always in “rush mode”-we have to hurry to get to the game, school, church or even grocery store because we have other places to be and things to do. When possible, give yourself as much time as you can before going somewhere. Allow moments of reflection and pause so that you can enjoy and find peace wherever you are.

6. Let it be – Whatever the present moment contains, accept it as if you had chosen it – Eckhart Tolle. I love this quote. We can’t always control our circumstances but accepting those moments for what they are will bring peace and calm to your heart.

I hope taking these steps help you on whatever journey you’re on!

Meet Malena

I’m Malena, I’m a mom of two and have been married for 10 years now to the love of my life. I’m a southern girl-born and raised in Atlanta Ga but my family is from Argentina so I have a little of that Latin flare.

When I became a blogger one of the hardest things I had to do was come up with a name. I researched, looked around to see what everyone else was doing and honestly went crazy trying to come up with the perfect name. I like to write and share so many different aspects of my life that I couldn’t just focus on one thing, so my husband and I came up with “Living with Paz”.  So simple right? We wanted to take you along this journey of life with the Paz family. BUT…

What you may not know is that Paz in Spanish means peace, and that is also what I hope to express through my blog. I want you to live a life in abundance, full of peace and joy. Living your life to the fullest and being the best version of yourself. Not only for personal growth and happiness but also for your children, family and loved ones.

How To Get Over A Bad Day

The other day I got some disappointing news from my job. It made me feel angry, sad and upset. Worst of all, I got the news in the morning which made for a crappy rest of the day. On the bright side, it made me realize several things about myself and inspired me to write this post, someone say #winning!
