3 Ways To Be Relaxed During Your Engagement Photoshoot
BY KYLIE THOMPSON
As a photographer of love and relationships, I’ve captured couples throughout all stages of a relationship… friends, dating, engaged, married, and celebrating anniversaries! I’ve found that engaged couples can easily be distracted and jittery because they’re full of emotion. They’re excited about being engaged, excited to plan a wedding, anxious about how smoothly the wedding planning will go, and emotional that they’re about to spend the rest of their lives together. As a photographer, I’ve taken it upon myself to find ways to make them more relaxed and natural during our engagement photoshoot. Here are 3 ways that work like a charm.
1. Meet Your Photographer
It’s very important that you connect with your photographer before the engagement photoshoot. Even if distance keeps you from meeting in person, connect on FaceTime, or the phone. A week or two before the photoshoot, I reach out to my couples to connect with them on details of their relationship and how they want the photoshoot to feel. I get to know who they are so that I know how to make them comfortable and bring out their natural personalities. This makes everything go more smoothly for both the couple and the photographer.
2. Reminisce on the Proposal
During the photoshoot, it’s special to remember why we’re all here taking these photos…it’s because you got engaged to be married! I love asking my couples how they got engaged during the photoshoot. They get so excited and start to tell me the story. This brings out some laughs, warm moments, and occasionally a few tears. It makes for such sweet exchanges as they relive it. Even if you don’t share the story out-loud during the shoot, think about the proposal and remember what it felt like that day.
3. Pick the Right Setting
One of the best ways to ensure you’re comfortable during the photoshoot is to pick a photoshoot location that is natural for the two of you as a couple. If you’re familiar with the area, or the setting in general, you’ll be more relaxed and enjoy the shoot more. I ask my couples what they enjoy doing together. Sometimes their answers are going to the beach, strolling through the city, or hiking. This leads us to choose the setting that is natural to them and it makes such a difference during the shoot and with the outcome of the photos.
An engagement photoshoot is such a special and exciting time for a couple. As long as you relax and enjoy each other as a couple during the photoshoot, everything will fall into place.

Hey there! I’m Kylie; a 25-(ish)-year-old photographer enjoying life with my husband and fluffy golden retriever.
If we sat down for a cup of tea and macarons, I would tell you that I believe laughter and dancing around your house lip-syncing to Whitney Houston can cure almost any sadness. I’m passionate about family, travel, writing, and photography. I love using my camera to capture the sweet moments of beautiful souls like YOU.
When I’m not working, I’m enjoying the shoreline of Lake Michigan in rain, shine, and snow, or snuggling with my husband and golden.
