5 Reasons Why I Don’t Believe in New Year's Resolutions

Wow! 2019 is here and all of the “what are your New Year’s resolutions” questions are rolling in! I used to be a believer of setting New Year’s resolutions and goals that were not achievable or caused stressed to my daily life. I made New Year’s resolutions and most of the time they sounded like this:

1. I am going to work out everyday (compared to the zero that I was currently doing at the time).
2. I am going quit eating all junk food (which is great, but I was consuming junk daily).
3. I am going to cut out coffee completely (sure, I drink coffee 2-4 times a day).

If your resolutions look similar to mine, then it is time to throw it out the door and say goodbye to New Year’s resolutions.

Why I Don’t Believe in New Year's Resolutions

1. If I really wanted to better myself, I shouldn’t need to wait 365 days for the New Year to start taking care of myself mentally, physically, and emotionally.

2. January 1st is just a date. Like any date. Make a change today! What is the difference between December 20th, June 15th, and January 1st? Absolutely nothing. 

3. For New Year’s resolutions, we tend to set unrealistic goals that make us feel defeated so we give up entirely. If we take small steps towards these goals we will feel so much accomplishment even with the tiniest difference.

4. Self-improvement does not happen overnight when a New Year begins. Self-improvement happens over time and is an ongoing process. 

5. New Year’s resolutions are like setting yourself up for failure. Instead of setting a couple of extremely big goals at the beginning of the year, jot down small daily goals that make you feel good about yourself and make you want to be a better person.

Instead of setting a New Year’s resolution, I am going to live every day and be in the moment. Write things down in a notebook and reflect, spend one on one time with my Ryland and Rori, celebrate my wins – big or small! Pursue my passions and love myself first. These are things that I live for and has been an ongoing fluid process.

  1. I 100% agree with your reasons not to believe in New Year’s resolutions. Why do we wait till January 1st to make a change? I think by doing this we end up setting unrealistic goals that are impossible to achieve. When I used to do this, I would only make it through the first month before I gave up.
