Yesterday was our last day in the Bahamas and we had so much fun. Today we’re traveling home and we’re ready to get back into the swing of things. A couple weeks ago we had the coolest opportunity. Gerber invited our family out to visit one of their family farms that grows butternut squash. So we flew out to Michigan and spent a couple days touring the farm and meeting the people behind the scenes at Gerber.

Aside from the fact that Atticus was like a little kid in a candy store running around the field picking squash, riding tractors, and taste testing some of the new snacks and foods that they are developing, we learned so much about the high quality standards Gerber has to bring fruits and veggies from farm to table.

Fremont, where the Gerber family started making baby food in 1927, is the cutest, quaintest little town and it seems like everyone there is part of the Gerber family. They even have a baby food festival there every year. I always just assumed they just take a fruit or vegetable, blend it up and put it in a tub or pouch. But seeing the behind the scenes in the kitchens where are all the foods are developed and meeting the experts, you see how much care and effort is taken to figure out the best recipe to make sure our babies gets the nutrition that they need.

Before we left the farm, David asked the farmer how quickly the squash could be processed and we were amazed to find out that it would only take a few days after picking! And the peas and some other vegetables are cold pureed and cooked the same day they are picked. So now a few weeks after our tour, I can imagine that when I get a Gerber product with squash in it, it came from that batch of food that was picked just weeks ago. Maybe the squash is one that Atticus picked 😉 Not likely since the farm produces 2,500 tons of squash a year.

We have always been BIG Gerber fans. Both Atticus and Rosie’s first solid foods were Gerber Rice Cereal. Atticus is really picky but Rosie is our really good eater. She’ll eat most blends of fruit and vegetables, and whenever I can sneak in a veggie, I consider that one in the win column. And as moms, we’ll take any win we can get! They also love Lil’ Crunchies, Puffs, and Yogurt Melts which they inhale in pretty much one sitting.

Did you know that babies from Gerber’s panel of 2,000 tiny taste testers try out the recipes? We actually got to see a group of babies taste testing and it was really cool to see them in action. Later in the day, Rosie even got to be a little taste tester and she was happily trying some of the 3 rd Foods Lil Bits recipes. Now she is a real Gerber Baby!

Hope you’re having a good week!

*Thanks to Gerber for sponsoring this post and taking us behind the scenes with them.
