Barefoot BlondeBarefoot BlondeBarefoot BlondeSince it is summer and everyone is swimming, out in the sun, etc. I wanted to do a post on 7 ways to keep your hair healthy during the summertime! It is the best time in my opinion to give your hair extra love and there are so many easy ways to do it.

1. Throw a deep conditioner on while you’re lying out or by the pool! I recently discovered Hair Mayonnaise from Sally Beauty and ohhhh my goodness this stuff is AMAZING! Truly it is one of the best hair treatments I have ever used and with that price?!?! Too good to be true. I feel like it is my secret weapon when my hair really needs to be refreshed. Get your hair wet and throw it on your ends while you’re lounging outside and then rinse it off when you go inside or get in the pool! Your hair will feel amazing.

2. Sun protection spray. Ion has a really good sun protector you can spritz on your hair before you go out in the sun all day. It will really help keep your hair from drying out and it will keep it nice and soft!

3. Use a swimmer’s shampoo. I swam in the swim team all growing up so I know all about this stuff! It is definitely a must have if you are going to be in the pool and having chlorine in your hair! Just wash your hair with it when you get out – super simple and makes a BIG difference.

4. Wear a hat! This one is kind of obvious but I always forget to throw one on and it’s probably the simplest and quickest solution when wanting to keep your hair healthy in the sun.

5. Get your hair wet before getting in the pool. Your hair is like a sponge so as soon as you get in it will soak up all the chlorine! If you get your hair wet with a hose or shower beforehand then your hair will soak up WAYY less!

6. Go a summer without heat. This is a hard one! But a couple years ago my hair was so damaged and it was really horrible. I needed to do something drastic to get it healthy again so I went an entire summer without blow drying, curling, etc. It was ammmmazing and the best results I have seen in trying to get my hair healthy! If you can’t cut all heat maybe just tell yourself you won’t blow dry all summer.

7. Use a sea salt spray or braid your hair. This is a really easy way to give your hair texture so when it air dries it looks nice and beachy and you can skip curling/flat ironing!

  1. I would LOVEEEEE to see a post about keeping your hair healthy in the winter! Im currently trying to baby my hair back to health after a horrible hair appointment (my original hair dresser moved) and any tips from you would be a blessing for my blonde head???

  2. Hi Amber, thanks so much for the great tips 🙂 I generally use really natural products and have heard that using coconut oil and lemon juice as a hair mask is a great way to help hydrate and relax curls (I have really curly hair but prefer the wavy look). Have you heard of this? Thanks so much! xo

  3. Great and helpful post, I love it!! I just got the hair mayonnaise and on the back it says to apply heat I was wondering if the was a necessary step or can I skip it? I have extremely think hair but it’s dry and dead at the ends how this product will help????

  4. Awesome post! I saw that you wear extensions, are they clip-in? If so, do you wear them to the beach and pool? I assume you don’t swim with them in? What kind do you have? I got clip-ins a few weeks ago and love them but don’t want to ruin them. Thanks 🙂

  5. I have a question, I am at the beach on vacation many times during the year and I have long hair. It seems to get so tangled on the beach and in the ocean. What can I do to help my hair so it is not so tangled? Thank you,

    1. Have you tried a leave in conditioner or detangler spray? I would look into getting one and spraying it out after the shower!! xo

  6. hey amber!! I tried to contact you, but your contact box does not work for some reason!
FIRST OFF, I LOVE YOUR BLOG. IT’S GREAT. I HAVE REALLY DRY SKIN, HAVE ALWAYS HAD DRY SKIN and sensitive (ECZEMA). I’M NOW THINKING ABOUT CHANGING MY DIET TO A VEGAN DIET DUE TO THE DRYNESS! DO YOU SUGGEST ANY PRODUCTS OR HOME REMEDIES FOR DRY SKIN? DO YOU THINK THAT A DIET WOULD BE BENEFICIAL?

ALSO, MY HAIR IS SUPER DRY FROM MY SKIN BEING SUPER DRY. DO YOU SUGGEST A SHAMPOO FOR DRY/DANDRUFFY HAIR?

LOOK FORWARD TO HEARING FROM YOU.

    1. Hi Brittany!! Thanks so much for the comment 🙂 And I have no advice about the vegan diet because I have never tried it but I hope it works for you!! My favorite skin care products is Kate Somerville gentle face wash, Estee Lauder brightening serum, and La Mer face cream. They work great for me, but I am not sure for dry skin. As far as your hair, I suggest trying Moroccan Oil hydrating shampoo and conditioner. Also, I use a deep conditioner once a week which helps me with dry hair!! Good luck! xo

  7. Hey Amber!! I am a little late on seeing this post, but I just recently started reading and following your blog and I seriously adore you! I just bought the hair mayonnaise and used it the other day, I put it on dry hair and then washed it out during my shower afterwards. Would you recommend getting your hair wet first and then applying it?? Also, how often do you use the product??

  8. Can’t wait to try the hair mayonnaise! I’m a naturally dirt blonde/ light brown and keep my hair dyed platinum… I’ve been going completely heat free and can always use a new product suggestion!

    1. I know you will love it!! It’s amazing stuff!! And yay for no heat!! I bet your hair is silky smooth because of it!! xo

  9. I am trying to grow my hair long for my upcoming wedding but as soon as it gets a few inches past my shoulders I get so many split ends and while I can get the length I want I can’t keep my long hair healthy. I never straighten or use a flat iron and I only blow dry the top of my head and let the rest air dry. Any advice?

    1. Hi Dani!! I am sorry I am just seeing your comment, but what kind of shampoo and conditioner are you using? I suggest using a moisturizing one, I think it may help. I love Moroccan Oil moisturizing shampoo and conditioner best!! xo

      1. At the moment I’ve been using Lush solid shampoos and their solid Jungle conditioner because I am traveling and it is very convenient to pack but I think I’ll try the Moroccan Oil Shampoo because my hair needs it! Thanks for the tips!

  10. Hey girl! Just got the hair mayonnaise and I’m excited to use it! Do you apply it to dry hair, damp hair, or wet hair?? I can’t figure out which would be best…thank you!!

    1. Hey Monica… She did write it above, saying wet your hair first, add the mayonnatias while lying out then rinse it ????

    2. I’m so sorry I am just seeing this!! But yes, wet your hair and then apply!! I hope you were able to try it!! xo

  11. These are great tips! It’s such a struggle having to worry about keeping up with long hair in the summer. We love your blog at Hey Abigail 🙂

  12. Thank you for sharing these awesome tips! I too have blonde hair and I stay far away from the pool because I’m terrified that my hair will turn green from the chlorine. I will be trying these tips for sure!

    1. Awesome!! Thanks so much for reading Nikki! I am glad you liked the tips 🙂 xo

  13. I love these. Could you do s tutorial or just explain how to get the best look using sea salt spray? And post pics? I have never used it but have heard great things. My luck and my hair would end up looking like I stuck my finger in a power outlet.

    1. I am sorry I am just seeing this comment 🙁 Thanks for the suggestion, I will keep that in mind for a future tutorial!! Until then, I will just tell you how you can use the salt spray. First get your hair wet if dry or wash it and towel dry and brush hair out, then spray the salt spray throughout your hair, you can scrunch your hair up with your hand (if that makes sense haha). If your hair is naturally straight you want to do this step for sure! If it naturally wavy you can just apply the salt spray and then let it air dry or blow dry on cool! It will create a beachy wave look 🙂 I hope that helps!! xo

  14. Hi Amber! I love your blog and always check it once a day. 🙂 My hair has never been more than a few inches past my shoulders, but I’m committed to using all your great tips in a previous post. I haven’t dyed my hair since December where I also cut it to give it a fresh start. I use your trimming technique (I always cry a little bit inside when I see a split end). Oh and of course zero heat. I even take Viviscal and Biotin daily. I teach and coach swimming over the summer and I’m so afraid of my small but mighty hair growth calling it quits. I feel doomed to have medium length hair for the rest of my life! 🙁 I am hoping to have hair past my boobs by this time next year. Since you’re a swimmer too can you please think of any other tips for combating the wind, water and chemicals? I usually put coconut oil all over my hair, braid it, and try to keep it under a hat as much as possible. I hate to sound so silly or vain, but I can’t help but want mermaid hair…minus the damaging and drying sea salt. 🙂

    P.S. So excited you’re having a girl!!

    1. Hi Emilia!! It sounds like you are taking all the necessary steps to getting your hair all fresh and healthy this summer yay!! Keep it up! Your hair will LOVE you for it 😉 Coconut oil is also great!! Good tip there 🙂 And aww thank you so much!! We are so excited to grow our family and add a baby girl yay!! Thanks so reading love!! xoxo

    1. I am so glad you liked the post!! Dry hair is the worst!! Definitely try it out 🙂 How cool that you go to Dubai!! Do you have family there?!

      1. Hehe yes I do! 🙂

It’s an absolutely stunning place so I am very lucky to visit so often hehe!!

If you ever want to go somewhere different for a holiday then I totally recommend Dubai 😀 so many fun things to do that are baby safe too!!!

        Have a wonderful day
        xx

    1. Totally!! I was so glad when I discovered swimmer’s shampoo! It was life changing haha! Thanks for reading Susie!! xo

  15. Can not WAIT until I get my own extensions! Your hair is like a dream!! I used to teach swimming lessons and didn’t use any swimmers shampoo or deep conditioner! My hair suffered so bad! So glad to know these awesome tips!!

    1. Did you order some?! You will LOVE them!! And I know! It’s crazy how damaging chlorine can be! I am glad you like the tips!! xo

  16. This isn’t actually related to this blog post, but as you have traveled to a bunch of places i just wanted your opinion. I will be going to school in London for the next couple of months and will have the opportunity to travel around on the weekends and i was wondering what some countries you have been that you would recommend seeing!? Thanks so much!

    1. How fun!!! That is so exciting! You will love it there 🙂 yay!! And I would suggest Italy, France, and Greece for sure!! Enjoy!! xoxo

  17. I DIE FOR YOUR PICTURES! I saw you use a Cannon but what kind of lens do you use?

    1. Ahh thank you love!! I use a 24-70 2.8 lens a lot of the time but use several others as well 🙂 xox

  18. Great tips!!! Ill have to try that hair mask from sallys. Have you ever used coconut oil as a mask? What are your thoughts on that compared to the hair mask from sallys? I try so hard not to use heat on my hair and I have really noticed difference! It is crazy how damaging heat is! Thanks for the tips babe!
    XO JNESS

    1. Thanks so much!! And YES! Coconut oil is also amazinggg. Love it! The only thing I don’t like about coconut oil is how greasy and hard to wash out it is.. Either are great options 🙂 Thanks for reading gorgeous!! xo

  19. omg I just saw that you said that your natural hair is a mousey brown color!! That is exactly what mine looks like. How did you decide to dye it blonde? it looks so pretty and natural 🙂

    1. Aww thank you!! I have been highlighting it since like junior high once my natural blonde color starting fading!! I haven’t changed much since 🙂

  20. I loved this post and honestly have always been so envious of you and your sisters’ hair (always so beautiful)! Cannot wait to try these out!

    1. Thanks so much Megan!! I am so happy you liked the tips!! 🙂 xo

  21. I love the idea of the deep conditioner, the name just totally draws you in! With my light blonde hair, swimmer shampoo saved my butt when I swam on the swim team in high school 😀 And I have never blow dried my hair for that reason as well, with all the time my hair spent in the chlorine and plastic swim cap, it was damaged enough! Thanks for sharing and what a gorgeous backdrop 😀

    1. Oh I bet!! You have such a pretty blonde color but I bet if you didn’t use swimmer’s shampoo it would turn green 🙂 Thanks so much for reading Julia!! I am glad you liked the post! xo

    1. Haha totally!! I have tried it with real mayo and the smell is terrible!!! haha the name will get ya! But it is amazing!! 😉

  22. Great tips! My hair is really course and wavy in general, but with the summer heat and humidity it turns into a lions mane. That hair mayonnaise looks like it could easily be my new life saver
    Lana 🙂

    1. Thanks Lana!! I am so glad you liked them 🙂 Let me know if you try it and what you think about it!! xo

  23. Great tips! I recently went back to blonde and got a full head of highlights and it shocked me how much my hair texture has changed when it air-dries! Not to mention that I’ll be spending most of my afternoons at the pool or beach, I will definitely be implementing some hair TLC 😉

    1. Thank you beautiful!! I know what you mean about the texture change! It can be hard to get used to 🙁 A little TLC will be so good for your hair!! xoxo

    1. Thanks Jamie!! Salt spray is so perfect for the beach 🙂 I love it!

  25. Love this post! Definitely going to try to not blow dry this summer! I love your sister’s white top- where is it from?

    xo Jen

  26. I am totally trying that Hair Mayonnaise! I have been searching for a deep conditioner lately. Thanks for the tips.

    1. Yay!! Let me know what you think 🙂 I hope you love it like I do!! xo

  27. These are great! I find that my hair (being very curly) can get frizzy, brittle, and dried out VERY fast during the summer. This is so helpful! Thanks (and congrats on the baby girl announcement!:))

    Sara

    1. Thanks so much!! I am glad you liked the tips 🙂 These products will moisten your locks right up!! And aww thank you!! We are so excited to grow our family!! xo

  28. I am definitely going to have to try that hair mayonnaise! Love that it’s just from Sally’s! I was a swimmer growing up too and I know ALL about how bad chlorine is for your hair…I miss those days, but I don’t miss how fried my hair was all the time!

    http://www.thegoldentabby.com/

    1. I know it!! Such a great product! Let me know what you think if you end up trying it 🙂 Chlorine is so crazy damaging ahh! I never even cared when I was little haha but good thing I do now 🙂 Thanks for reading!! xo

  29. Deep conditioner and going the whole Summer without any heat is something that I’d recommend as well! Just writing these sentences now, I’m sitting with my wet hair and letting it dry naturally. I have also ditched the hair curler and straightener and am going completely “hardcore” on giving my hair a break that it needs. I also did an Ola Plex treatment last week which was a great start to this “healthier hair” process because it helps to rejuvenate your hair and connect all of the broken cells that were ruined by heat, dirt, brushing, etc.

    http://lartoffashion.com

    1. Yay!! That’s so awesome!! Your hair will LOVE you for it! I have heard if Ola Plex!! Did you notice a big difference? I will have to try that out! Thanks for reading love!! xo

  30. My husband thinks I’m crazy because almost every time we go in the pool I throw my hair in a high bun and keep my head above the water! haha. I’m like “you have no idea how chlorine effects my hair!”. It will be dry for like 2-3 washings afterward. I love the idea of keeping a deep conditioner in while laying outside. I also use a sun protection spray. I will have to check out this hair mayonnaise, though! Thanks for sharing!

    1. Haha totally!! Guys don’t get it 😉 Definitely try the hair mayo, let me know what you think!! Sun protection spray is super good for colored hair too! I am glad you liked the post!! Thanks Brooke!! xo

  31. I’m trying to use heat less, but it’s so hard some days! I do love the beachy hair though, so I’ll keep my hair dryer in the drawer.

    Kristi | Be Loverly

    1. It is so tough!! But your hair will thank you at the end of the summer 😉 It helps so much!! Even if you only use heat once a week it will help! Thanks for reading Kristi!! xo

    1. I do too!! I love the beachy salt waves!! Perfect for the summer 🙂

  32. I’ve recently started getting partial highlights so it’s more important than ever to protect my hair. Thanks for the tips!

    1. Definitely!! Bleach does a lot of damage so it’s smart to start protecting it now 🙂 I am glad you liked the tips!! xo

    1. Thanks so much Quinn!! I am so glad you liked the post!! Let me know what you think about the hair mayo 😉

  33. I have been attempting to do your 6th tip this summer, my hair is so damaged. I have been just avoiding straighteners and curlers and have seen a huge difference but maybe I will try skipping blowdrying too. I feel like that is going to be soooo hard haha. I have tried hair mayonnaise before its so amazing! Sally has some really great products!

    xo Kristen

    1. Awesome!! I am so glad to hear that!! Your hair will thank you at the end of the summer 😉 And yay! I am glad you like hair mayo!! Amazing stuff!

  34. I swam in high school too! I used swimmers shampoo and everything! The only other thing I do to prepare my hair for swimming is braiding – every time I get in the pool I always do a simple braid with a thick rubber band so my hair doesn’t get ridiculously tangled because that is the. worst.

    1. No way?! I loved swim team!! And that’s a great tip!! I try to do that too but I usually forget 😉 Thanks for reading!! xo

  35. These are such GREAT tips! I was on the swim team too and I had no idea about the swimmers shampoo ha ha. I would put leave in conditioner in my hair and throw on my cap before hitting the pool. So happy you shared these ideas and will def use these items (so affordable!). Thanks again!

    1. I am so glad you liked them!! Thanks Lindsey!! Leave in conditioner works great too!! I used to do that too 🙂 xoxo

    1. I know what you mean!! It totally does 🙁 It can be nice to get your hair wet first and then put the hat on! Hats are nice for sun protection on your face too! Thanks for reading!! xo

    1. Thanks so much Carly!! I would definitely try the sea salt spray!! It’s so perfect for the beach 🙂

    1. It totally does!! I have tried regular mayonnaise but I couldn’t stand the smell haha! Thanks for reading Supal!! xo

  36. I have my husband french braid my hair every night and it has been amazing! It has seriously grown so much and so healthy this past year because I have used minimal heat and just had it wavy or in one of your awesome braids! 🙂

    1. Oh my gosh what a sweet husband!!! How stinking cute!! I am so glad to hear that!! Yay for healthy hair!! 🙂
