If you’ve been following my snap chat over the last couple weeks you’ve probably seen that Rosie is so close to walking! At first she just started propping herself up, but only while sitting next to something or someone but now she can full on stand up on her own without anything next to her. Atticus walked at 13 months but Ro will probably walk around 10 or 11 months. I can’t decide if it’s a good or bad thing. On the one hand, walking means she’s not scooting around, sometimes on dirty floors, but walking also means moving around MUCH quicker, which means getting into a lot more trouble;) The first walk (aka waddle) is my favorite though! Atticus would always veer to his left and it was hilarious haha.

You can really tell she feels proud of herself too when she does it. Her whole face lights up and she claps with us when we tell her good job! These are the types of moments I love to capture. This might be hard to believe since we do share so much, but, we don’t share all our pictures or videos. A lot of times we’ll take out the camera and we decide to keep the photos for ourselves. I’m all about sharing, but I like to keep some special moments private.

The best camera to use for these moments is the camera you will realistically have with you during a candid moment like this. There’s a time and a place for a big DSLR like our Canon EOS 5D Mark III. But sometimes, like in moments like these, you don’t have time to pull out the big camera. By the time you meter, set up, take lighting, and finally get down to the right level, which with kids is usually about 12 feet off the ground, the moment is gone. Most of the time you have a split second to shoot from the hip. That’s one of the reasons why I like some of our smaller more compact cameras, like the PowerShot G7 X, or if you really want the versatility of a DSLR and have the ability to use several different lenses, the EOS Rebel T6i. I love the flip screen on the G7 X. It pops straight up so you just hold it down at “kid level” and fire away. It also has a grid which makes it super easy to shoot down low because you can actually make sure you’re taking pictures that are level. Nothing worse than taking pictures only to find out later that they are all tilted.

At the end of the day, you’re going to have moments you want to remember forever, like first steps, first words, and other milestones. They won’t just be fun for you to have but fun for your kids to look back at. If you haven’t seen it yet, David did a great video recently on how to capture candids of your kids. You should check it out, there’s a lot of really good pointers;)

  3. So precious. These pictures are amazing and perfectly capture that learning-to-stand stage! And I think it’s really special that you keep some photos and moments to yourself 🙂 Thank you for sharing so much! xoxo

  4. I love seeing pictures of your family, y’all seriously are the cutest! I have a little girl who is he same age as Rosie. Where do you get the little bows for her hair and how do you get them to stay? Are they the alligator clips or snap clips? And also what kind of hair ties do you use for her?

  5. Awww, I love the shot of the three of you where A is laying down with his head sideways. He looks like a little surfer dude in those swim shorts <3. And Rosie is soooo cute trying to stand like a big girl 🙂

  6. So which camera/lens combo created this magic? I definitely need something fast to keep up with my little guy. I have the T5i and I love the quality but miss things. If these photos were the G7 X I’d love to know! Might be our next investment.

  7. Love these pics! Which of the cameras did you use to capture these beautiful memories?

  8. Which camera did you guys use for these photos? They all turned out super amazing!

  9. can you talk a little bit about atticus and his speech? He seems like such a happy child and I am just curious the challenges you’ve had to overcome with a child that has trouble talking.

  10. She is adorable!! My son is a couple of weeks older, and we’re in the same phase- except i don’t have amazing pictures to prove it 🙂

It always makes my day to read your posts- you and your family are real living examples of the fact that there is life after kids, and a really good life 🙂

  11. Love all your pictures! Such a cute family! If you don’t mind me asking where did you get Atticus’s cute swim trunks from? Looking for some cute swimwear for my 1 year old son.

  12. Rosie waving on Snap is just about one of the cutest things ever! I am so sad I was unable to make the meetup over the weekend but I hope you capture her first steps soon!

  19. I love this post! I think it’s so important to document the real life family moments and not just the polished and posed ones. I am a photographer who specializes in this type of family photography because it’s hard to capture moments like this on your own, there is either a family member missing because they’re taking the photo, you forgot to bring your camera, you don’t have professional gear, you want to experience the moment with your family and not worry about taking photos, etc. My favorite part about it is showing people how perfect their every day moments can be and giving them images of their real memories. These are such gorgeous photos of you and your family, thank you for sharing!

  20. You are very wise to save some pics and videos for your family; some of those moments are too precious to share with the world. Love the pics of Rosie and Atticus at the beach!

  21. These pictures are beautiful! I may need to go buy that powershot because I only have the 80D and I totally know what you mean that you can miss some amazing moments when you have the big dslr! David also mentioned in one of his videos you use the powershot for vlogging. I just recently got into vlogging and have tried to make it work with the 80D but man is that hard and I feel like people look at me like I am absolutely crazy haha. Would you say that its a really good camera for vlogging? Do you still get really great quality?

  22. These photos are just precious! You can tell how proud she is 🙂 I love David’s videos about photography. There is so much information out there on which cameras to get, how to use them, the different settings, etc. it can just get so overwhelming! I am thinking it is time to upgrade from my little point and shoot, and I will definitely reference y’alls posts. Thank you! xo

  23. Great post! I don’t blame you for keeping moments private, we do the same. I only have a Rebel EOS and have been able to get some great shots of the nuggets. Pretty much all of my pictures are candid because two kids together just don’t sit still, right? Beautifully Candid

  24. Obsessed with your family! I would totally keep special moments like that private as well.

  25. Love! My husband Collin is a photographer and has a fancy smancy camera that I can not figure out for the life of me so we got the EOS rebel tsi for me to use! I told him about wanting it from reading it here and he was stoked I showed interest in photography so we got it! Thank you for the inspiration!

  26. So we’re these photos taken with the mark III or the powershot G7 x? They’re stunning!!?
Also, do you use any kind of leave-in conditioner when you’re at the beach? Because your hair looks great!

  27. I love seeing the kidos on your snapchat! and all of the candid photos are so cute. I haven’t commented in a long time, but I’m glad to see you are all so happy and doing well 🙂

  28. How is she so darn cute?!?! It’s gonna be so hard to catch up with her once she starts!

  29. Amber-
I just wanted you to know how much you’ve inspired me this past year. I had a baby girl in January, and I struggled with nursing followed by PPD. I thought I would never feel like myself again. I stumbled upon your instagram back when I was pregnant and looking for ideas for pregnancy photos (I even copied one of yours ?). Since that time, I have once again found my love for styling my hair, something I stopped doing years ago because I thought I was too old, which has really helped me stay busy and out of a funk! I’ve tried many of your recommended products and love them all! You recently commented on how you stopped caring about what others thought of you because you wanted to inspire yourself; I couldn’t agree more. Thank you again. I just thought I’d share with you!

  30. Amber,
LOVE these photos! I have the Canon EOS 5D Mark III but I am SO terrified to bring it around water. What do you use to capture photos in the water like this? Are y’all just super careful, or is there some device that waterproofs your camera?

    Thanks beauty!

  31. Awww, those are amazing and important milestones! Kids are so inspiring and spending time with my daughter or my friends’ kids always makes me so humble, appreciative of the present moment and also opens up my imagination while playing together. 🙂

  32. Sweet little Rosen!! I love their little waddles too 🙂 right now we vlog with the power shot elph 360 so it’s definitely time to upgrade to the g7x haha. The quality looks unbelievable and the flip screen is like… yep you just need it.
